Up to this point we've sketched characters and vehicles so it's time for a switch! This week's drawing/painting challenge is to:
Create a concept art piece depicting an alien environment with signs of an ancient civilization (that may or may not be abandoned).
Think Star Wars episode3 or chronicles of riddick! Both have some sweet planet designs.
Some things to consider to help generate ideas:
Think of the use
What was the civilization like? peaceful? barbaric? Was this home to a land of giants? or hobbits? How about the technology, advanced? How do the structures reflect these characteristics? For instance, if the creatures can fly, maybe they don't need roads, and maybe their buildings sort of look like nests.... Also, what is the terrain like? Lots of mountains? Or sinkholes? How did the inhabitants adapt to the terrain? The ewoks lived in treetop villages....
Think of the look/feel
Is the environment cold? wet? dark? on fire? A cold unforgiving planet may have lots of jagged craggy elements. A warm inviting place may have soft vegetation or gentle waves. This feeling can be amplified by color choice, lighting, and how you draw as much as what you are depicting.
You have one week. Good luck and have fun! :)
